Central New York’s night sky becomes a superhighway for millions of migrating birds every spring and fall. These birds rely on celestial cues from the moon and stars to navigate, but increasing levels of light pollution are disrupting their navigation systems, contributing to higher collision risks and migration shifts. Studies estimate that light pollution contributes to the deaths of nearly 2 billion birds annually in the United States due to window strikes alone. Join us to delve into Lights Out Central New York, a new conservation project of Onondaga Audubon aimed at mitigating light pollution’s impacts on migratory birds. Learn about the science of light pollution’s effects on bird migration, practical steps we can take to reduce unnecessary nighttime lighting, and plans to advocate for better lighting laws to protect migratory birds in Central New York.

National Audubon is working to bring together a Community of Practice focused on bird-friendly buildings/collision reduction work, so that we can continue to connect chapters/staff working on similar activities across the country with periodic calls and other communications. We will be distributing via the Weekly Chapter Update and I’ll be reaching out directly to some chapters as well; NY/CT chapters that are interested can sign up for this group at the link below:
